Megans' History

History of Megalith Nu Sigma Phi Fraternity and Sorority
(Megans Society)

Founding in 1963

The Megalith Nu Sigma Phi traces its beginnings to 1963 at Central Luzon State University (CLSU), Nueva Ecija, Philippines. At its birth, the organization was known simply as Nu Sigma Phi, and its members were called Nuans. During this early stage, the fraternity struggled to accelerate its recruitment efforts, and growth remained modest.

Expansion to Mindanao

The fraternity’s continuity and expansion were carried forward by BM Ponciano P. Taray, believed to have come from the pioneering group at CLSU. With vision and determination, he established a new chapter at Central Mindanao University (CMU), Musuan, Bukidnon, using the same by-laws that governed the original chapter. This marked the beginning of the fraternity’s spread beyond its Luzon roots.

Transformation into Megalith Nu Sigma Phi Society

In time, the fraternity redefined its identity. From Nu Sigma Phi, the name was transformed into Megalith Nu Sigma Phi Society, with its members now called Megans. The word Megalith, meaning “great stone,” signified strength, endurance, and permanence — values the fraternity sought to embody in its principles and brotherhood.

Reorganization during Martial Law (1972)

A critical turning point came on September 21, 1972, when Martial Law was declared in the Philippines. Amid this historic national upheaval, the fraternity underwent reorganization, uniting its chapters and strengthening its foundations. This period of redefinition ensured the society’s survival and paved the way for its sustained presence in Philippine campuses despite the challenging political climate.

Nationwide Growth (1980s–2000s)

Following its reorganization, the Megalith Nu Sigma Phi Society steadily expanded to colleges and universities across the country. Chapters were established in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, turning the Megans into a truly nationwide fraternity and sorority. Alumni associations soon followed, ensuring that the bonds of Meganism endured beyond the college years.

The fraternity became known not only for its rituals and traditions but also for its active participation in youth development, civic programs, and community service. By this era, the Megans had firmly established themselves as an organization that valued brotherhood, sisterhood, service, and leadership.

The Modern Megans (2010s–Present)

In the decades that followed, Megalith Nu Sigma Phi Society continued to evolve, embracing new approaches to leadership, recruitment, and community engagement. With the passage of the Anti-Hazing Law, the fraternity modernized its initiation practices, ensuring that its traditions aligned with both legal mandates and its enduring principle: “Omnia Vincit Amor” — Love Conquers All.

Today, the Megans Society stands as a resilient and expanding organization, upheld by its collegiate chapters and strengthened by its alumni associations. From its humble beginnings at CLSU in 1963, through reorganization under Martial Law, to its current presence across the Philippines, the fraternity remains steadfast in its commitment to unity, service, and the enduring bonds of Meganism.
